We've hiked every trail on this list more times than we can count, some of them with guests, some on our own mornings before anyone else is out. Here's the honest ranking, with distances from our properties so you can plan your day.
Quick Reference
1. Anna Ruby Falls, The Classic
0.8 miles round trip | Easy | ~35 min from our Sautee properties
The most popular trail in the area for good reason, a paved, accessible path through old-growth forest to a dramatic double waterfall where Curtis Creek and York Creek meet. Go early on weekends (before 9am) to avoid the crowds. The falls are at their most impressive after rain. Dogs allowed on leash. Parking fee applies.
2. Mount Yonah, The Summit Worth Earning
4.2 miles round trip | Strenuous | ~20 min from our Sautee properties
The crown jewel of White County hiking. Mount Yonah (named after the Cherokee word for "bear") rises to 3,173 feet and delivers 360-degree views of the Chattahoochee National Forest. The summit is a bare rock face with dramatic drop-offs, not recommended if you're uncomfortable with exposure. Start early; the parking lot fills by 9am on weekends. This is where Army Rangers train. It's not easy. It's worth it.
3. Raven Cliffs Falls, The Hidden One
4.5 miles round trip | Moderate | ~25 min from Helen
The best-kept secret on this list. A forested trail alongside Dodd Creek leading to a 40-foot waterfall that flows through a narrow rock cleft, one of the most unique geological features in North Georgia. The creek crossings can be tricky after heavy rain. Bring trekking poles if you have them. Significantly less crowded than Anna Ruby.
4. Unicoi State Park Trails, The Network
Various lengths | Easy to Moderate | 5 min from Helen
The park has over 12 miles of trails around the lake and through hardwood forest. The Smith Creek Trail connects Unicoi to Anna Ruby Falls (2.4 miles one way), a great option to avoid the Anna Ruby parking lot madness. The lake loop is excellent for families with younger children. Park entry fee required.
5. Dukes Creek Falls, The Easy Reward
2.2 miles round trip | Easy-Moderate | ~20 min from Helen
A beautiful trail through rhododendron tunnels to a series of cascades where Dukes and Davis Creeks converge. The viewpoint at the bottom is dramatic, a deep gorge with multiple tiers of falls. Some steep sections but generally manageable for most fitness levels. Parking on GA-348.
6. Brasstown Bald, The Highest Point in Georgia
0.5 mile to summit OR 6.5 mile loop | Varies | ~45 min from Helen
Georgia's highest peak at 4,784 feet. You can drive most of the way up and take a shuttle or short paved walk to the summit observation tower, or do the full 6.5-mile Arkaquah Trail for a genuine backcountry experience. The summit views on clear days stretch into four states. Worth it on any visit.
7. Tray Mountain Wilderness, The Backcountry
Varies by route | Strenuous | ~35 min from Helen
For experienced hikers who want genuine solitude. Tray Mountain (4,430 feet) is accessible via the Appalachian Trail and offers some of the most remote terrain in this part of Georgia. The summit is an open heath bald with sweeping views. Logistics require planning, limited parking, no services.
